Soluna Fine Art is proud to present Layers to Essence by Korean contemporary artist Seungtaik Jang, his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. The exhibition centers on the artist’s signature Layered Painting series, reflecting his ongoing exploration of color, process, and the very nature of painting. Jang uses custom-made wide, flat brushes to repeatedly apply semi-transparent layers of acrylic mixed with specialized mediums onto canvas and Plexiglas. Through cycles of layering and accumulation, colors interact and transform, generating subtle luminosity and depth that expand the full potential of color.

The deliberate layering process requires patience and precision, allowing the works to embody the passage of time and reveal the artist’s disciplined, process-driven practice. By focusing on color, the most basic yet fundamental element of painting, Jang investigates what painting can be beyond representation. Color becomes a vessel for emotion and sensation rather than a purely visual form. The light that emerges between layers exists as both material and perception, guiding viewers to uncover the essence of painting through the quiet intensity of layered color.
