Soluna Fine Art is proud to present Where Grain Becomes Light, Korean artist Kim Duck-Yong’s third solo exhibition with the gallery in Hong Kong. Working with wood, mother-of-pearl and pigment, Kim creates works that embody Jasaengjimi (자생지미), a beauty of self-emergence that is not transplanted from outside but grows from lived memory and inherited sensibility.
At the heart of Kim's practice lies a quiet duality: grain and light. The organic grain of wood carries the weight of time already lived, while the shimmer of mother-of-pearl evokes a longing for time yet to come. Past and future converge on a single surface, unified through the artist's hand-crafted process that resists hurried invention and empty ornament.
Rooted in the spirit of literati painting, where inner cultivation is valued over technical showmanship, Kim's work reinterprets traditional sensibility within a contemporary pictorial language, offering a form of Korean beauty that reaches toward the world without losing its inward core.
